Finding Indigo

I am often asked how to find Indigo. My usual reply is "Go to Withington. Ask a student." However, I have been guilty of saying "It's opposite the Victoria" It isn't! It's opposite The Albert. It's just a doorway, so look in vain for any frontage. The name is over the door. Push it open and go down the steps. Don't be scared.

Hilary Step Back Room Extension

It is taking a while to show benefits for the live music. Despite more than doubling the area at the back, the number of seats available had initially risen from 12 to 14. The extra space is occupied by some extremely clunky tables and two large leather sofas. I recommend a visit to the Victoria Mill furniture warehouse in Burscough if some characterful tables and chairs are needed at a knock down price. Some trendy lights have been installed, but, they are pointed at the ceiling. Last night we had the odd situation of the audience brightly lit and the performers in darkness. Considering the cost of the whole job, two spot lights pointed at the performance area would seem a sensible addition.

Ed's first set at the Bakers on Tuesday was devoted to Funk. recalling the heady days of the Harold Salisbury Quartet when any of the notables in town might turn up for a Jam on a Friday night. More please, and more of Nina Henchion who is rapidly gaining experience and confidence singing both with Ed's band and with Andy Kidd at the Dog on Sundays. As she expands her repertoire we will hear more of this lady. To my delight, Ed played some of his Funk numbers at Indigo last night to oblige me as I had not heard the whole set at the Bakers. As far as I could see, everyone else was as pleased as I was.

The Thursday Blues night at the Lloyds is arranged to alternate with Pete Giles's Night at Gallery (Late Abode)so, if you turn up and find no band, you only have a short walk to remedy the situation. Are the various parties involved in arranging gigs finally learning to promote live music sensibly? Before we know it, they will be: informing the South Manchester reporter, emailing me, using A boards, installing a telephone at the venue, running an email list and putting out fliers. "What was that pink thing I just saw flying past?" Kudos to those who already do all these things and don't say "It's somebody else's job to do that." They know who they are!

Derek Brimstone has sung this song, with the original words, for some thirty odd years. In reply to a query on an earlier thread he emailed the following...

".....'Portuguese' was written by a chap called Patrick Cogshill. He was a student at Exeter university and he did a floor spot at my gig there - sang three brilliantly funny songs that he'd written - and that was one of them. He dictated the words to me - (I wish I'd got the other two, they were just as good)- and the rest is history. I never saw, or heard from him again - just sort of immediately lost touch, although I attributed the song to him on my first album"

It has been attributed to Paddy Roberts, but sceptics please note that Paddy never recorded it or indicated that he knew it existed. I heard Derek's 1st album has been re issued but I can't find it. I have eMailed Exeter U. to see if they can trace Mr Cogshill.

To my surprise, Dave Swarbrick's concert at the Irish club Feb 29th was already a topic of conversation and some people have already bought tickets. I wanted to point out that Jen Sawdon was on the bill too, and this was a rare chance to hear her sing folk songs. I didn't get the chance, but there is plenty of time. One of the finest voices you will ever hear, and a family background steeped in folk music. Not to be missed on any account. This could propel her into the top echelons of folk singers in one bound. Kath sings Joni

Gossip last night was that Kath Ord would, among other things, be singing some of her Joni Mitchell set which, I don't think has been heard in Manchester until now. Hillary Step 9 pm tonight.

Kath played Fiddle, Sax, Guitar and Appalachian Dulcimer to the astonishment of many. Her singing was at its most assured in the Joni Mitchell numbers. Vocal range and pure tone were never in doubt. This sounds like a winning format to me. Just needs lots of gigs to hone the rapport with the band (Grant Russell and Andy... Brown) and spread the word. (And don't fiddle with the microphone!)

I wrongly attributed "I'm Hip" to Blossom Dearie. It is by Dave Frishberg, the Sondheim of Jazz.

Thursday Odyssey. First to the Beech where "Last Waltz" proved to have much less pulling power than "Blues Train". It also suffered badly from strange sound balance. Either dialogue was inaudible or the Band too loud. There seemed to be no acceptable compromise. Then "Escape" where Bleedin Heart where rehearsing for their gig next week. They also told me they were playing the Albert Club shortly. Finally to Gallery where Bo Lee, Pete Giles et al seem to have set up a successful night. Once a fortnight folks.

Faced with the task of finding a band for the Hillary Step at 24 hrs notice, Grant Russell recruited Luke Flowers and Sam Healey who borrowed a Tenor sax for the occasion. I always had a good feeling about this gig and I was not disappointed. Find three first class musicians at the top of their game, give them no time to prepare, and a small but attentive audience, and how can you go wrong? They had nothing to prove, and proceeded to enjoy themselves hugely. As in other branches of entertainment, this sense of a fun happening was picked up by the audience. Grant said he was sorry it was not recorded, but it will remain in memory for a long time. It makes turning out on a damp November night worthwhile. It was worth crossing the county for!

I heard a rumour last night that there might be a band on at Solomon Grundy's tonight. I could not confirm this on the web so I decided to phone. I tried 3 numbers. One was "not recognised", one "not accepting calls" and one with an answering service. I left a message but got no reply. Proprietors complain that bands do not attract enough custom to justify the cost. Is it any wonder?

The band which turned out to be Roger Hughes, Sam Healey, Jim Wallace and Simon Moore with Clarissa Land, should be worth an hour of any-ones time. Clarissa, an excellent singer, kept encouraging people to take the empty chairs near the band. No one did, because the music was much too loud. The bare walls of Solomons give a bright acoustic and the sound was fairly bouncing off the walls. What a pity!

A cheerful performance of "The Trout" marred only by a man with a whirring and flashing camera showed that they can do the difficult stuff for fun. The White Swan Ladybarn closed yesterday without ceremony. This means that the Creative Space program is now on hold. I now have Dulcimer's October gigs (See Pages) thanks to Rachael Magowan. I'm not clear how much of this is recorded music. I've had to combine it with Matt and Phreds till I can reorganise my pages or Blogger allows me a greater number.

I had tentatively arranged for a newly formed Celidh band to play Tuesdays as a live rehearsal in a pub room. This fell through as they found somewhere closer to home. So there is a vacant rehearsal space for a new band Tuesdays or possibly Thursdays. Must be an acoustic lineup as there is noise problem otherwise. Let me know if it might suit you.

Kath Ord has had to cancel her gig at the Hilary Step this Sunday. Helen is on this Sunday 16th, with the same band, Andy-Stamatakis - Brown and Grant Russell. Helen distinguished herself last time she came to the Hilary so expect a good night. Commiserations to Kath who will now appear on the 11th Dec with Andy and John Sandham on Bass.
